GameCell 4 – The Yawhg
by M. Joshua
I shot up…
Stevie showed up fifteen minutes early. Nick got there within the next five minutes. We chit-chatted and waited for Alex to arrive. I gave them a preview of the game we’d be playing: The Yawhg.
When Alex showed up, we talked about things we were excited about in our lives. Then I asked: “What do you think of when you imagine a ‘Christian Leader?’”
The guys shared their thoughts. Then I shared this:
The mother of James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to Jesus with her sons. She knelt respectfully to ask a favor. “What is your request?” he asked.
She replied, “In your Kingdom, please let my two sons sit in places of honor next to you, one on your right and the other on your left.”
But Jesus answered by saying to them, “You don’t know what you are asking! Are you able to drink from the bitter cup of suffering I am about to drink?”
“Oh yes,” they replied, “we are able!”
Jesus told them, “You will indeed drink from my bitter cup. But I have no right to say who will sit on my right or my left. My Father has prepared those places for the ones he has chosen.”
When the ten other disciples heard what James and John had asked, they were indignant. But Jesus called them together and said, “You know that the rulers in this world lord it over their people, and officials flaunt their authority over those under them. But among you it will be different. Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first among you must become your slave. For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
- Matthew 20:20-28 (NLT)
We talked about that for a bit. Alex Prayed. And then it was time for videogames.
Alex hooked-up his 360 and set us off on a map that he made in Halo 4.
Around this time, Jeff Adams showed up. He brought us root beers and cream sodas! Alex talked us through some of his design thoughts for his map. We enjoyed it and thanked him for having us try it.
And then it came.
The Yawhg was upon us.
We gathered. Four of us selected characters. I opted to be the non-playing narrator. After a brief introduction, guys decided where to go and what to do.
On a turn, a player might decide to go to the alchemy labs and brew potions all week, or go to the garden and meditate, or go to the arena and fight. Each location has an option of two activities and a litany of random events that arise after starting one’s activity.
The random encounters always present a player with an option. Depending on one’s stats (and some randomness) they’ll be either successful or not. Rewards or penalties get doled-out to their stats. Each players’ actions rarely affect the others directly until the end of the game, when the Yawhg comes. Then things get real.
Here’s some video of Nick going to the Gardens:
A Bit of Comic Surgery…
We played two rounds of the Yawhg (due to the clamor for an encore). But in between rounds, I wanted to share something I got at the Steam Sale:
Stevie tried some Surgeon Simulator 2013 (which Jeff shared tips for). Stevie enjoyed messing around with things in the menu and learned how funny it was to try to control a hand with clumsy PC controls. Then he was off into his first surgery. He didn’t get too far past shattering the ribs and pulling out the “unnecessary” organs to get to the heart. But it was funny to watch him try.
When 10pm hit, Stevie’s mom showed up and I knew it was time to close up shop. The guys still lingered around a bit because we always want to hang out more.
Jeff stuck around for a bit and gave Alex a ride home.
I felt like we all started to really gel and connect more by the end of the night. Maybe next time, we should specifically make time to just hang out and talk afterwards instead of me trying to shoo everybody out?
