Relationship Question & Answer
Q. I am a housewife with a nice home, loving husband, no money worries, couple of children, the whole thing – BUT I am depressed a lot of the time. It’s only happened since I got married and started a family but I can’t understand it when things are so good. A lot of my friends are a lot worse off and they’re happy! What’s wrong with me? I’m not on any medication but I keep thinking I will need to ask my doctor for something soon as it’s getting harder and harder to get through the day. – Mary
A. The most important thing to do first off is to get out of the idea that there’s something wrong with you. There isn’t. It could be a hormonal condition left over from childbirth or any number of other possibilities.
Depression is a complex condition but eliminating clinical forms or a mental disorder which clearly doesn’t sound like the case with you, it can happen to anyone on an intermittent basis.
Usually, the best thing to do is just allow it to run its course if you experience a few `blue’ days here and there and only seek help if it starts to become a regular occurrence.
That’s obviously what’s worrying you and certainly anti-depressant medication may be necessary in the short term but keep in mind that depression can also be a symptom and by just addressing that and not the cause, you are losing a valuable opportunity to heal yourself at a deeper level.
Here’s a thought – perhaps your life is too `perfect’ and it’s the human need to worry causing depression. Could you simply be bored with your life as it is? Maybe you need more mental stimulation.
See the doctor by all means but don’t get hooked onto self-blame and victim thinking. You are infinitely powerful and can get to the root of your feelings with just a little help and guidance.
